Constellation Brands CEO Bill Newlands told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday how the company plans to improve its wine and spirits division, which saw its net sales decline during the most recent quarter. "We're going to put a lot more focus on the critical brands, brands like the Prisoner, and Meiomi, and High West, and Mi Campo, as examples. Despite shortcomings with its wine and spirits business, the company's quarterly earnings report showed strength in beer sales. Newlands also expressed confidence in Sam Glaetzer, the new leader of Constellation Brands' wine and spirits business. There is officially one winner for the $1.128 billion Mega Millions jackpot — and the taxman will take a sizable share, experts say. A single ticket sold in New Jersey won the game's fifth-largest grand prize after matching all six numbers drawn Tuesday night, Mega Millions announced Wednesday. The final jackpot dropped from an estimated $1.13 billion to $1.128 billion based on actual ticket sales. The lucky winner will choose between two options: an annuitized prize worth $1.128 billion or a lump-sum payout of $536.6 million cash. New Jersey taxes prizes over $10,000 and the winner will owe millions to the state, including a mandatory withholding, on top of their federal tax bill, he said.

In the midst of an exceptionally warm winter, resorts like Campo Felice have a major problem: there’s no snow. And a long-running drought means there isn’t enough water to make the amount of artificial snow needed to paint its slopes white. And with a lack of rain and record-breaking heatwaves, the lakes that normally provide water for artificial snow have run dry. Across all of Italy’s ski resorts, nearly 90% use artificial snow to some degree, according to Carlo Carmagnola, a snow expert with Météo France who studies the impact of climate change on ski resorts. These changes have been hard not just on the Lallini brothers, but their employees, which usually number 250 in the ski season.

However, you may still owe taxes if you made a profit on resold Taylor Swift tickets, experts say. While third-party payment apps won't report as many business transactions to the agency this year, you are still required to pay taxes on profits, including resold concert tickets. "The big thing this past year was selling Taylor Swift concert tickets," said certified financial planner Tommy Lucas, an enrolled agent at Moisand Fitzgerald Tamayo in Orlando, Florida. 'If you want to follow the law ... report it'Ticket profits have always been taxable, and this may affect those who resold Taylor Swift concert tickets this summer. Keep copies of your purchase receipts for goods you later resell, such as those Taylor Swift tickets, since tax liability will be based on your sales proceeds minus the original purchase price.

Can Certain Foods Really Reduce Your Cancer Risk?
  + stars: | 2023-11-27 | by ( Nikki Campo | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
On average, more than one in three people in the United States will develop cancer at some point in their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. And many of those cases, they say, can potentially be prevented, including by making changes to your diet. Scientists have a good idea of what foods you should avoid to reduce your risk of cancer, such as red and processed meats, “fast” or processed foods, alcohol and sugary drinks. But knowing what to eat isn’t always straightforward, said Johanna Lampe, a cancer prevention researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A 65-year-old California fugitive who eluded authorities for nearly four decades before his arrest in June has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing a Florida woman. “Good luck,” the judge told Santini, who has been in jail without bond since his arrest in June at his home near San Diego. Before his arrest, Santini had lived in California under the name of Wellman Simmonds. Harmon said a woman who was in a relationship with Santini told investigators that he borrowed a van to go on the date. Santini told the woman the next morning that he’d killed Wood and dumped her body, Harmon said.

Additionally, the value of non-cash charitable contributions is limited to 50% of your adjusted gross income, which can be a "real hassle" if you're donating a newer used car, which are "valuable right now," he said. The donor must include the 1098-C when they file their individual tax return, and detail the donation on Schedule A. If you made more than $5,000 in non-cash charitable contributions, you'll also fill out Form 8283, Lucas said. Even if you don't see a tax benefit, you relieve the charity of the effort and expense of repairing and selling the car. How to vet a nonprofit for a car donationIf you plan to donate a car, make sure the organization is a 501(c)(3) organization, Campo explained.

MOBILE, Ala.—When Kelly and Mike Francis saw the home-insurance quotes for the house they wanted to buy here last spring, they had sticker shock. The couple decided to take out a different policy from a little-known insurer that included reduced coverage of an aging roof, which made the house vulnerable to hurricanes and other fierce weather that batter the Gulf Coast. At about $4,500 a year, it was cheaper than a comprehensive policy, but they could still barely swing it.

Constellation Brands on Thursday reported earnings and revenue that topped analysts' expectations for its fiscal second quarter of 2024. The Mexican beer powerhouse, owner of the Modelo Especial and Corona Extra brands, reported double-digit sales growth in its beer business as the division continues to dominate the overall beer and high-end categories. The Modelo brand family was a particular bright spot: Modelo Especial grew nearly 9%, while Modelo Chelada brands posted growth of more than 40%. The company's wine and spirits brands, however, underperformed year over year. In its previous quarter, beer sales rose 11% year over year driven by stable consumer demand and higher pricing.

Two cities in south-central Spain, Badajoz and Montoro, broke the heat record for continental Spain during the month of October with 38 C and 38.2 C, respectively. The previous record was 37.5 C, documented in the resort city of Marbella in October 2014. The weather station at Madrid's iconic Retiro Park, which is over a century old, equalled its October record of 30 C set in 1930. He added that future summers would not only be hotter, but also longer, extending into the traditionally mild and rainy autumn.

[1/2] SAG-AFTRA actors and Writers Guild of America (WGA) writers walk the picket line during their ongoing strike outside Warner Bros. The SAG-AFTRA agreement covering video game performers expired last November and has been extended on a monthly basis as the union negotiated with major video game companies. As earnings climbed, video game company staff beyond the performers covered by SAG-AFTRA have been unionizing for the first time this year. In July, Sega workers formed the largest multi-department video game union in the United States, after Microsoft's video game testers formed their first U.S. labor union in January. For video game performers, the union is also calling for more safety measures for motion capture performers, who wear markers or sensors on the skin or a body suit to help game makers create characters' movements.
